The Hotel Room – presented by Hart Players – review by the playwright!

Being greeted by such lovely members of Hart Players, and the amazing box set of The Hotel Room, was just the start of what turned out to be a very enjoyable performance of my play!

All involved in putting on this production of The Hotel Room had clearly been having a wonderful time and were welcoming and brimming with enthusiasm, saying they’d sold out of tickets and found themselves having to turn people away. It was wonderful to see this level of local support and is a true testament to the passion the Hart Players invested in this performance. Talking to various members of the team, from crew to cast, it was evident that a fantastic time had been had by all!

Sitting quietly at the back of the hall, my wife and I watched my characters being brought to life, along with wonderful artistic additions, which certainly added to the humour on many an occasion. We could hear all of the lines perfectly from our position, which were delivered with energy and commitment to character. Every performance was beautifully delivered and there was clear chemistry between the pairs of characters throughout. The character development was clear to see and the efforts made by everyone involved to maintain this right to the very end of this final performance, demonstrated the energy of this incredible group of Hart Players.

Afterwards, there was a real buzz from everyone involved and many congratulations, which were wholeheartedly deserved. For my part, it was wonderful to see the pure joy and many moments of laughter you gave to your audience, as you brought my play alive so perfectly. Thank you so much for that. It was an absolute pleasure spending this evening with you and I look forward to seeing further incredible productions.

"I laughed so, so much! Calvin is outrageously naughty! A babysitter’s nightmare…but anything to stop Laura being snared by the lecherous Bob. Candid asides to the audience and hilarious physical theatre. Fabulously acted. A must-see."

A thought-provoking window into friendship, value and the age-old question: ‘What is Art?’ Can strong opinions break this trio’s long friendship? Wonderfully acted - A skilful representation of the exasperation of not understanding another’s actions. Emotions fly high!

"Perfectly cast and superbly performed. A lovely cameo of life in an earlier time. The performance absolutely caught the understated nuances of Coward's excellent writing."

Still Life at Edinburgh Fringe 2019

The Hart Players theatre company brings Noël Coward’s Still Life to the Fringe. The company did justice to a thoroughly entertaining play. An accidental meeting leads to love between Laura Jesson, a housewife, and Alec Harvey, a doctor who Coward himself originally played. The tension between moral propriety and passionate love unfolds, until the lover’s part for the sake of practicality. Coward satirises such “decency” by initiating all characters in apparently degrading relationships, as they wilfully take “liberties”.

The company did justice to a thoroughly entertaining play.

These secret meetings take place in the presence of multiple station staff, immersed in romances of their own. “Saucy” Stanley and bad Beryl never failed to make the audience laugh, as Myrtle Bagot ordered them about and the cheeky, light-hearted Albert Godby popped in and out. The plight of the lovers was playfully subverted as Bagot flicked through Lady Chatterley’s Lover or Beryl munched away on a Mars bar, having wiped down the table with the same tissue she blew her nose on.

The pair were at times a little quiet, especially when compared to the energy and resonance of, say, Godby. Equally, Dolly (played by the same actor as Beryl) was hard to hear as she gossiped away about an adulterous disgrace. This play was an enjoyable watch, but there are better Coward plays are out there – look no further than the Old Vic’s Present Laughter. Yet of course, the two aren’t exactly on equal playing fields. Nonetheless, Still Life rarely emerges onstage, so if Hart Theatre return to the Fringe, this is a production to see.

"I loved the show! The performances are great and the use of different actors
in the second piece gave "Chloe" a freshness which would have been denied by
using the same actors in "Kidderminster". All eight actors are superb in their
roles not only as individuals but also as an ensemble where reliance on
receiving lines and cues from others is important. I have seen some good, bad
and average am dram companies' output in my time, but your group is decidedly
right there at the top of the am dram league. Would I go to see the show
again? Yes, definitely. Would I recommend it? Yes, unreservedly. I
certainly hope you come back to the Fringe next year because I'll certainly be
in the audience. Thank you for the autographed t-shirt; it'a lovely souvenir
of four wonderful evenings' entertainment."

Kind regards

Douglas
